This is a concise list of newspapers on the Internet with information that includes price (usually free), description of the paper and whether the WWW site is a complete or partial issue or an archive site. Click on country of choice for:

  • La Presse Francophone en ligne: consult the menu on the left for a complete list of French-language newspapers and magazines. Click on Titres nationaux to pull up headlines from French newspapers.
    Les grands Titres de l'Actualité one paragraph in French from Agence France Presse relaying the daily headlines.
  • Yahoo France's A La Une: read the two or three paragraph day's headlines, arranged by categories,including international, national, business and news by topic.
    Le Petit Bouquet also known as le quotidien électronique de l'actualité française. Send your email address or have advanced level students subscribe free to Le petit Bouquet and receive daily summaries of headlines from major Parisian newspapers.

  • Journaux on the Web-Suisse/Afrique & Proche Orient et al. this site's extensive menu includes links to Swiss newspapers and to dailies and magazines from throughout the French-speaking world.
    Lehman College CUNY: French Press Site scroll down for Radio emissions from France and other French-speaking countries (download RealAudio to listen in); for television information and links as well as for sites from la presse francophone.

    Daily press releases from The European Union on the left side, select the flag and initial of a specific EU country to read (in the FL) the day''s information about the EU. Scroll down to the menu at the bottom to search specific subjects (key issues;what's new; mail box) related to the EU.

  • Les Manchettes daily headlines from many French Canadian newspapers. Assign most othe most relevant topics, even to your beginning classes. Read teaching suggestions below for more ideas.
  • Le Monde Headlines: on-line version of Le Monde headlines. The entire paper is by fee subscription only using Klebox; the day's front page is free. Any afternoon (Monday, for example) in the USA one can access Le Monde's front page for Tuesday!
  • La Libération: on-line version of the day's La Libération from France. Click on l'actualitéfor current events from the perspective of the Voice of France's left, La Libération. Notice the leading topics in big format at the top and to the right of the screen. Click on Dossiers for interesting articles for class use. The Art of the Siesta for example, is an example of a recent topic with links to articles about the art of napping. Assign the Forum section to read and contribute to discussions of current events; recent discusssions include the role of media and the death of Diana, and opinions about the topic of a shorter work week in France (less than a 39 hour a week). An excellent site for class use.
  • Dernières Nouvelles d'Alsace: on-line version of the day's newspaper DNA, from Alsace, France. Click on the menu at left for many sections useful for FL classes: la Une for front page news; Alsace:La Météo for air quality in the region;Info section contains short summaries of news from France and the world; click on lire in each section for an article and images.
  • Lyon Capitale: on-line weekly from Lyon. Click on front page for articles; research archives by clicking on archives. Select a topic by name or research archives by date in 1997 to find current events for a specific timeline.
  • Les Actualités Gouvernmentales: daily press releases from the Quai d'Orsay, with archives of releases from the previous month. Scroll to the bottom for weather in French. Cut up this report to distribute to students, put up a map of France and Voila! an instant weather show, as each finds the region and reports the weather. Click on Coupe de France In Putnam's French Simulated Trips: Paris section) for the upcoming World Cup in France. Go to Villes d'Acceuil to access French cities involved in the World Cup and use as a geography and history lesson. The Calendrier des Evenéments explains the phases and lists teams, times and locales for each segment.   • KIOSQUES FRANCOPHONES: An extraordinarily complete guide to Francophone music, press and cinema in French all at one site. Select from the left-hand menu the French-speaking country or region (including Africa, Belgium, Switzerland, the Caribbean, France, Luxembourg) then assign students a site to research. Select from the following categories, then have them compare the press, music topics, radio or movies for a series of fascinating studies focusing the current French-speaking world.

    Journal de montréal en ligne click here for the online editionof the Journal de Montréal. Click on manchettes for the daily headlines, then scroll down for the menu listing other sections (actualités (news of the day), affaires (business news), monde (international news) and sports on line. Click on menu at left for the magazine inserts and for the history of the newspaper.

    Le Soir Illustré this Belgian daily offers daily headlines and page-long human-interest stories dealing with current events, all in French. Click on cartes postales to download famous sites from Bruxelles including frites and ahem "that statue of a little boy...".

    Lehman College CUNY: Presse Afrique Francophone a mega-site for French-speaking Africa news, including the Mahgreb and Sub-Sahara Africa. Select from continent-wide news, news by country and scroll down for selected music sources Art and literature resources.

    Africa Online: La Cote D'Ivoire scroll down highlighted topics for current events and topics of note then click on actualites for four online newspapers in French from La Cote D'Ivoire.

  • Journal des Enfants: click on A la Une cette semaine for headlines in French from a Mulhouse newspaper specially written for 8-14 year olds. Check out the joke of the week, too.
  • Radio France Internationale: scroll to the bottom and click on version texte for useful items in French including: Agenda: what's happening throughout the world this week; Ephéméride: happenings from history for each date this week; and Revues de Presse: for paragraph-length summaries of world news. Click on then print both French and English versions of the news. Cut both up into topic-length strips then distribute to groups, so beginning level students match the 2 versions. MFI Hebdo for longer articles on current event topics about French politics, sports, economic development, education, health, and science. An excellent site for projects and units, ideal for use with Putnam's Teaching Activities.


  • Titres/ Actualités: for the headlines of the day from Actualinfo, a French-language search site.
    Le Monde en Bref: a summary of daily world news in French, useful for all levels, even beginners.
    France 2 news: summary of daily world news from France 2 to read before the program on TV worldwide. Click on Sports, Emissions, Magazines and Météo (cities and temperature highs and lows given) to create group activities.
  • France 3 news: short summary of daily world news with pictures, from France 3. Headlines from recent programs also accessible by scrolling to bottom of page.
  • Télé Sept Jours pull up the daily French TV Guide. Click on grille horaire for an hourly grid of the offerings. Have students compare channels within a two hour period. Click on genres for an overview of programs by categories: what and when are the kids shows/sports/ dramas/documentaries. Pull up the daily horoscope too!

  • MagNet: for a summary of daily headlines from France, click on A La Une de Magnet; click on archives to read short articles from 1995 to present; then on Les Unes de 1996 for headlines of the current year.
  • Radio Belche: Click on Le Numéro de cette semaine for news from Belgium in French. Click on Archives forcurrent events from earlier dates.
