Varsity Girls' Winter Track
 |
The 2003 - 2004 girls’ varsity winter track season saw
some major scheduling changes from years past. This year might have set
the tone for future winter teams as the 30-woman roster competed in five
DVGTCA meets that included three consecutive December meets at Lehigh
University and Ursinus with 60-90 competitors in each event. The season
started well for freshman Jenny Norcini, who broke the school record in
the 50m dash, clocking a 7.1, beating the 2001 official time of 7.3. Sophomores
Claire Pelura, Kelsey Reinhard, Jane Gartland, and Alexandra Gladstone
lead many of the team’s 4x200 and 4x400 relays. Returning from a Fall
oversees education, junior Elisse Douglass placed third in the long jump
(16'6") and sixth in the 55m hurdles (8.7) in only her first meet
back late in January. Douglass’ time of 8.7 was good enough to qualify
for the 2004 Indoor Track Championships at Penn State, her second trip
in three years. Both Douglass and senior co-captain Jocelyn Hanamirian
competed in the DVGTCA Meet of Champions. Hanamirian placed sixth in the
400m to qualify for her first run at the DVGTCA championships in February.

The 2002-2003 Season
The Girls Winter Indoor Track team hurdled over a long stretch of cold
snowy weather to compete in several DVGTC meets this year. With strong
upperclassman leadership, the girls wrapped up their season with visits
to Ursinus and Lehigh colleges for major 60-team invitationals. School
records were broken in the SSm hurdles and 200m sprints by sophomore Elisse
Douglass. Douglass, who held the previous records, broke them again with
a 8.60 in the SSm hurdles and 26.9 in the 200m (shattering her old record
of 27.9 from last January). Before suffering a season-ending ankle injury,
Douglass qualified for the DVGTCA Meet of Champions and the PA State Championship
in both the SSm hurdles and 200m. The triple jump school record also fell
thanks to junior Jocelyn Hanamirian's leap of 31'02" - surpassing
her old best of 29'7. set last February. Other upcoming standouts that
broke personal records were junior 9 Ibs. shot put thrower Lindsay Donatiello
(24'7"). After starting the year throwing in the low 20's, Donatiello
worked hard to gain four more feet this season. Junior 800m runner Lauren
Shugrue, also chopped off significant time placing 8th at Ursinus with
a PR of 2.31.8. Freshman Claire Pelura strengthened her 200m time with
a 29.7 split in the 4x200m at Ursinus and Liz Brennan blew by her competitors
in a GA 1600m with 6:04. Many girls are gearing up for the Spring Outdoor
season as we say thank you and goodbye to our seniors.
