Special Awards Class of 1929 Gold Basketball - Joseph A. Rosati School Awards and Championships 1. The Hill School Boys Basketball Tournament - Champion First Team All Main Line Times Teams: Boys Basketball
- Jerome M. Henderson, Wayne R. Ellington & Brian T. Shanahan First Team All Inter-Ac Certificates: Boys Basketball - Jerome M. Henderson and Wayne R. Ellington Individual Team Award Presentations and Comments from the Coaches Girls Basketball “You've gotta believe!” After being picked to finish out of the top three teams in the Inter-Ac, the girls’ varsity basketball team capped an outstanding year with a trip to the inaugural Inter-Ac post-season championship game. Battling the Germantown Academy team to a standstill well into the fourth quarter, the girls nearly upset the sixth-rated team in Southeastern Pennsylvania. Ably led by captains Lauren Bobzin and Kelly Sutter, the team posted a 17-6 record against a schedule that included victories against top teams from the Catholic League Northern Division, Central League, and Friends League, as well as leading independents like the Hill School and perennial Inter-Ac powers Penn Charter and Notre Dame. In addition to winning more league games than any team in girls’ basketball history, the senior class of Bobzin, Sutter, Alison Murray, Ashley Heist, and Frances Fox led EA to victory at Notre Dame for the first time in school history, then helped defeat Notre Dame again two days later in the first round of the Inter-Ac tournament. Juniors Lizzy Waples, Kerri Hadden, AnneMarie Person, Andrea Vukovic, Jenny Soowal, and Franzi Hopf lead a returning squad that hopes to build on the foundation set by this year’s outstanding senior class. Assisted by sophomore Kaitlyn Fallon and freshmen Kellie Mooney, Ashley Aruffo, and Callye Komlo, they hope to mount a major challenge in the race for Episcopal’s first Inter-Ac title. AND next year’s slogan: “It takes extra effort to be a champion.” Ice Hockey The Varsity Ice Hockey team finished the season a much improved and more experienced group than the one that originally took the ice back in November. Behind the leadership of senior captains Chris Pope and Ian Wessels, and solid goaltending from BJ Stone and Matt Teti, the team was competitive in many of the games throughout the year. As the season progressed, a core group of underclassmen emerged as players on which the foundation for future success can be built. We would like to thank the seniors for their hard work and dedication to the team, and we wish them the best of luck in their future endeavors. Boys Squash The Boys’ Squash Team had a successful season. Finishing tied for first in the Inter-Ac and fifth in the MASA tournament were signs of the consistent play by all of the varsity players. Highlights from the season were exciting home wins against Chestnut Hill, Haverford, and Penn Charter, and winning the league for the first time in seven years. The solid play of our top two players, Trevor McGuinness and Bernard Yaros, led the way for success. Juniors Pat Pasquariello, Kit Zipf, and James Francis had many key wins. Freshman Max Crockett and sophomore Peter Vale rounded out the ladder. The team would like to thank our two seniors, captains Nick Krotec and F.J. Leto. Their leadership and sportsmanship set the stage for the entire season. With several young players ready to move up from the junior varsity, we are looking for more success next year. Boys Winter Track The Boys’ Winter Track team had a successful season. The strong core of returning members was aided by the addition of some talented newcomers. The keywords of dedication and versatility describe the group that was formed during the season. This year the team participated in the Greater Philadelphia Track League and conducted themselves well. The 4x200 meter relay team of Speedy Uitto, Jamie Billmyer, Paul Heavener, and Peter Cohn consistently won their heats. The 4x400 meter relay of captain Micah Albrycht, Nick Imbriglia, Billy Brown, and Chris Jahnle were regularly near the top of their heats. William Thompson was a medal winner in the 200 meter dash. With all letter winners returning and additional team members ready to take their next step toward this level, the team looks forward to continued success next year. Boys Swimming The Varsity Boys’ Swimming and Diving Team had a season filled with hard work and fun times. Ably led by co-captains Nick Brown and Richie Clark, the team turned in strong performances against arch foe Haverford, Penn Charter and Haverford High. The strongest showing of the season was against Shipley. The relay teams of Richie Clark, Kyle McShane, Robert Havens, and Nick Brown were particularly dominant league - wide, with a perfect record in dual meet competition for the 200 Medley Relay! At the Small School Championships, the boys’ varsity finished second and then closed out the season with an impressive performance at the Eastern Interscholastic Championships. Girls Swimming The 2003 - 2004 Varsity Girls’ Swimming and Diving Team had a very successful season. Led by captain Lauren Owens, the team posted its best record in many years and saw the emergence of a host of talented freshman as varsity contributors. Highlights included the first win over rival Agnes Irwin in four years and an impressive showing against Notre Dame. In diving, Allie Fitzpatrick was the top competitor in the Inter-Ac, winning the Diving Championships by a substantial margin. Allie was joined by Rachel Daddona and Alexa Marymor to form the top diving squad in the league. All season long, the medley relay team of Julie Heier, Courtney Asher, Ainsley Brinton, and Jessie Small competed at a consistently high level and finished in third place at the Independent Schools Girls Championships. Senior leadership, depth, and a dedicated coaching staff were the cornerstones of this team’s success. Girls Winter Track The 2003 - 2004 girls’ varsity winter track season saw some major scheduling changes from years past. This year might have set the tone for future winter teams as the 30-woman roster competed in five DVGTCA meets that included three consecutive December meets at Lehigh University and Ursinus with 60-90 competitors in each event. The season started well for freshman Jenny Norcini, who broke the school record in the 50m dash, clocking a 7.1, beating the 2001 official time of 7.3. Sophomores Claire Pelura, Kelsey Reinhard, Jane Gartland, and Alexandra Gladstone lead many of the team’s 4x200 and 4x400 relays. Returning from a Fall oversees education, junior Elisse Douglass placed third in the long jump (16'6") and sixth in the 55m hurdles (8.7) in only her first meet back late in January. Douglass’ time of 8.7 was good enough to qualify for the 2004 Indoor Track Championships at Penn State, her second trip in three years. Both Douglass and senior co-captain Jocelyn Hanamirian competed in the DVGTCA Meet of Champions. Hanamirian placed sixth in the 400m to qualify for her first run at the DVGTCA championships in February. Wrestling Youth and inexperience would characterize this year’s Varsity Wrestling Team. However, that did not hamper the individual success of many on the wrestling team. Eric Minnick (125 lbs) and Ricky Brooman (112 lbs) both had outstanding seasons. Ricky was All Inter-Ac and a PA Prep State Finalist as a sophomore with over 65 career wins. Eric, who surpassed the 100 win mark this year as a junior in mid-season, was one of the first EA wrestlers to achieve this accomplishment this early in his varsity career. Eric was also a PA Prep State Finalist. Complimenting the varsity wrestling team in the PA Prep State tournament were Zach Morse (189 lbs) sixth place, Charles Alexander (140 lbs) eighth place, and Glenn Gallagher (103 lbs) with an eighth place finish. Thankfully, all varsity letter winners will return for the ’04-05 season. Boys Basketball The Boys’ Varsity Basketball Team had a highly successful and exciting year finishing 22-6. They were ranked among the top ten teams in Southeastern Pennsylvania all year, and captured the Hill School Tournament and the Cardinal O’Hara Tournament. Brian Shanahan was captain of the team and selected Second-Team All Inter-Ac. Two sophomores, Gerald Henderson and Wayne Ellington, led the team in scoring and rebounding and were selected to the First-Team All Inter-Ac. Overall, it was a great season with the promise of future success. Girls Squash The Episcopal Girls’ Varsity Squash Team won the Inter-Ac League
with a team match score of 8-0 and an individual match score of 55-1.
They went on to decisively win the MASA season-ending tournament, scoring
the most points ever achieved in a MASA tournament. We went on a fun team
trip to Connecticut, putting our undefeated record on the line against
the perennial New England champions, Greenwich Academy. In a tremendously
close-fought match, we ultimately lost 3-4, but look forward to taking
them on home turf next year. We want to recognize our three seniors -
Ashley Eyre, Casey Riley, and Mairin Barnes - who have each contributed
tremendously to the program. It has been a pleasure working with this
team and been exciting to strive to help them grow individually and as
a unit. - Back to Top -
